To strengthen regional readiness to support implementation of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme, training of trainers (ToT) for the Sulawesi and Maluku region was held on 28–31 January 2026. The activity involved 65 participants from provinces across Sulawesi and Maluku.

The Makassar Regional ToT was part of efforts to strengthen local facilitators’ capacity for more standardised, integrated and sustainable MBG implementation. It was designed to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of nutrition, food safety and nutrition education, while strengthening their ability to deliver further training in their own regions.

Participants represented regional leadership of Badan Gizi Nasional, provincial health offices, provincial education offices, provincial environment offices, Balai Besar POM, Balai POM and Loka POM, regional offices of Kementerian Agama, Badan Pengendali Mutu Pendidikan (BPMP), and regional branches of Persatuan Ahli Gizi Indonesia (DPD PERSAGI). This cross-sector participation provides an important foundation for regional coordination and integration, as MBG’s success depends heavily on stakeholder collaboration.

Participants strengthened their understanding of three main modules:

  1. Nutrition Standards and Food Safety for Food Handlers at Satuan Pelayanan Pemenuhan Gizi (SPPG);
  2. Training Module on MBG Programme Implementation in Education Units;
  3. Nutrition Education Module for the Free Nutritious Meals Programme in Education Units.

These modules provide an important foundation for comprehensive delivery, from ensuring that meals meet nutrition and food safety standards and strengthening educational institutions’ implementation readiness to helping students understand the importance of nutritionally balanced food.

The training brought together facilitators from Kementerian Kesehatan, Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan, Kementerian Pendidikan Dasar dan Menengah and IPB University. Their involvement enriched the learning process and strengthened the training content to meet practical implementation needs.

During the activity, participants attended presentations, discussions and in-depth module sessions designed to strengthen both conceptual understanding and technical skills. Alongside studying the modules, they prepared to become regional facilitators able to train educators in educational institutions and food handlers at SPPG.

The Makassar Regional ToT also emphasised that cross-sector capacity building is a strategic step towards maintaining MBG implementation quality. Nutrition, food safety, sanitation and nutrition education are interconnected and need to be integrated in regional delivery.

Through this activity, regional facilitators in Sulawesi and Maluku are expected to support more effective, safe and high-quality MBG implementation. The training outcomes are expected to strengthen regional readiness, extend good practices and encourage programme sustainability as part of building a healthy, intelligent and capable Indonesian generation.
